FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

THIRD ANNUAL WORLD EATING DISORDERS ACTION DAY TO TAKE PLACE JUNE 2, 2019 ACROSS THE GLOBE

Members of the eating disorders community including affected people. their families, professionals and policy makers, are uniting for the 3rd annual World Eating Disorders Action Day on June 2 across the globe.  Over 50 live and virtual events in countries as diverse as Argentina, Australia, Belgium, Brazil, Bulgaria, Canada, Chile, Columbia, Costa Rica, Croatia, France, Italy, Netherlands, Japan, Mexico, Peru, Spain, United States and others include national conferences and dialogues, ‘purple’ lightings of national monuments and bridges, public gatherings and presentations, radio and television interviews, as well as grassroots activism on social media platforms to provide accurate information, eradicate myths and advocate for evidence based treatment.

World Eating Disorders Day 2019 will advance the understanding of eating disorders as treatable genetically-linked illnesses that affect a large cross-section of the world’s population.  Eating disorders affect up to 70 million people globally with the highest mortality rate of any mental illness, yet many go untreated despite new research and methods showing positive results for full recovery. They affect people of all genders, ages, racial and ethnic identities, nationalities and documentation status, abilities, sizes, and socioeconomic backgrounds.

In 2018, the Lilac Ribbon – founded in Italy – will be launched as the global symbol for eating disorders and will represent the theme of ‘Breaking Stigma around Eating Disorders” and is featured as a way to encourage dialogue between communities, families, health providers and policy makers.

According to Amy Cunningham, Chair of the World Eating Disorders Day Steering Committee, “This is a 100% volunteer grassroots effort begun in 2015 to link countries together in a united effort to improve understanding about eating disorders, and to offer hope, solutions and change. We encourage everyone to jump on social media, use the hashtag #WeDoAct2018 on June 2 to follow the events, to learn and to participate!”
